Acupuncture and Your Emotions

Emotions and Our Health

By Kathleen Kenneally L.Ac.

From a Chinese medical point of view the emotions play a big part in a person’s total health and well-being.  There are five main emotions considered when diagnosing an illness- anger, joy, worry, sorrow/grief, fear and each emotion is connected to a particular organ system. The environments we live and work in also play a part in supporting our health.  When we are surrounded by toxic thoughts and negativity it can have a negative impact on our health and impair our body’s resistance to illness.  Even excessive expression of a positive emotion such as “joy” can create an imbalance in our system.  Emotions also have a way of “holding” illness in our bodies and this is why in many chronic conditions there is often an emotional element combined with a physical trauma that triggered the illness.

In this age of mass communication and computers we are faced with a whole different set of stressors than in earlier times. Through the media, we can now bring the world at large into our living rooms. Unfortunately, much of the media coverage today focuses on negativity, violence and uncertainty. Every human being is affected by these events on an emotional level and collectively as a society, we are experiencing a range of emotions from anger to anxiety to even joy.

From a biochemical standpoint, the hormone adrenaline is released into the system when faced with stressful situations, putting the body into “high alert”.  Over a period of time this too can weaken the immune system and the body’s ability to heal. Conversely, by creating opportunities where the body and mind can relax and rest, the body will have a better chance at establishing balance and wellness.

It is important to keep your energy focused on positive things. Do things that make you happy. Spend time with people you love and be grateful for the blessings in your life.  It is also important to include daily exercise –walking, yoga, Tai Chi for example.  Get outside and enjoy nature; and remember to breathe deeply. Breathing relaxes and re-energizes the body. These are just a few suggestions- but they will help make positive shifts in your wellness- physically, mentally and emotionally.

Acupuncture has a wonderful balancing effect on the entire body and nervous system.  One feels refreshed, relaxed and better able to deal with the daily “stressors” of life. When illness is addressed on all levels including the emotional level, the body has a better chance of recovery.

Acupuncture Compliments Western Medicine

Acupuncture Complements Western Medicine Improving Patient’s Recovery

by  | Oct 24, 2017 | Medical

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasizes a holistic approach that treats the whole person, unlike Western medicine, which attempts to separate the disease from the person. The practice of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is rooted in ancient Taoist philosophy which views a person as an energy system in which body and mind are unified, each influencing and balancing the other.
The ancient science and philosophy is based on the idea that Qi (pronounced “chee”), or energy, flows in rhythms throughout the universe. Energetic pathways, known as meridians, conduct Qi throughout the body. Stimulation of points along the meridians triggers endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain relievers, relaxes muscles, increases blood circulation and opens the energetic pathways. This heightens the function of all body systems and increases vitality and well-being. As the body’s energy becomes balanced, it can begin to heal itself and most conditions can be corrected or improved.

Many things are considered when diagnosing imbalances within the body. The pulse is taken for the quality; the shape, color and coating of the tongue are examined as well as the general appearance, personality and attitude of the patient. Ultra-fine, disposable needles are placed at specific points on the meridians and the treatment is virtually painless and often produces a heightened sense of well-being and relaxation.
Chinese Medicine is complementary to Western medicine. It is used as an adjunct to prevent illness, diagnose and treat disease, and to improve overall wellness. Acupuncture, acupressure, massage, dietary and lifestyle changes, exercise, relaxation techniques and herbal medicine are the foundation of treatments. These methods are used to reduce pain, increase metabolism, enhance immune system function and increase the potential for self-healing and recovery.

The World Health Organization has determined that Acupuncture and Oriental medicine are effective in treating muscle pain, respiratory issues, digestive disorders, headaches, gynecological issues, emotional and psychological issues and many more.

Newest Form of Treatment for Acne by PRP Part two of three

by  | Mar 1, 2016

Acne is an inflammatory condition caused by a clogged pore or hair follicle, trapping bacteria inside and leading to pustular formation. Without getting too detailed, pus is a combination of natural oils, dead skin cells as well as dead, local immune fighting cells that were recruited to the infection site. The problem is most of these closed off infections become impenetrable, even to immune fighting cells, and grow larger over time if the roof, or comedone, is not opened for drainage. In surgical lingo, this process is done routinely in the operating room, when large boils, cysts and other types of infections require an incision and drainage procedure in order to clear the body of these contents, for there is no effective way for the body to clear large collections of dead, cellular debris. It is no different for acne, the comedone needs to be unroofed, either via popping (which acts almost like an incision), scrubbing the face or getting a chemical peel to open the pores.

An acne scar is due to inflammation. After the comedone is opened and the pustular contents removed, the body continues to react at the injury and infection site. This is why a pimple is tender and red, two classic hallmarks of inflammation. If the inflammatory reaction is overdone, as is the case of certain genetic predispositions, or recurrent infection, the immune fighting cells can actually do more harm than good. These cells release contents that kill both bacteria and healthy dermatocytes, including collagen producing cells localized to the area. The key to acne healing, and any inflammatory process for that matter, is an appropriate balance between destruction and reconstruction of the local tissue.  This delicate balance is mediated by local and system factors found mostly within the blood.
